20 Writing Prompts – September 2015

It just hit me that it’s already a few days into September, and I didn’t have a list of prompts ready to go for the first time in a couple of months. I’m way off the ball right now. I feel like I’ve been losing my mind as of late, trying to do way too many things and not actually getting any of them done. Well, that’s not true. I am finishing projects, but I’ve been so busy working (photography has picked up recently) lately that I haven’t had as much time as I’d like to do what I’d want. Such is life. At least I haven’t completely forgotten to write this post. I feel so absent minded recently that it would not be a far stretch for that to happen. Anyway, here are the prompts for this month.

  1. Describe a day in the life of the devil.
  2. You walk outside one night to find the sky alight with bright colours, but they are not the aurora.
  3. “What happened last night?”
  4. There’s a note sitting in the seat you are assigned for your flight overseas. All that’s written is a time and place in the city your flight will arrive in.
  5. And it was at that exact moment that the book disappeared.
  6. Write a story in which the first line of the story is the same as the last.
  7. Write a letter to a teacher who changed your life.
  8. Write the sappiest romance you can think of.
  9. Create a curse to bring bad luck.
  10. “I told you it would work.”
  11. He was staring at me, and had been for what seemed like forever. I had never seen him before, but he seemed to recognize me.
  12. You find a staircase that leads directly into the ocean, seemingly to nowhere.
  13. You are visited by your future self and told you need to save the world from an alien invasion.
  14. Your car breaks down in a small town in the middle of nowhere. The attendant at the only gas station in town gives you directions to the nearest hotel, but upon arriving at the hotel, you realize it is closed and seems to have been for years.
  15. Describe darkness as a person
  16. Your protagonist is a young boy who is captured as a slave in some barbarian country. Tell the story of his capture and escape.
  17. You are living in a time of darkness, with no natural sunlight. One day you wake up to find a blinding light shining through the crack under your door, only to open the door and see the sun for the first time.
  18. You are a mermaid seeing dry land for the first time.
  19. You stumble upon an underground tunnel and follow it until you find a massive laboratory full of cages and animals you’ve never seen before.
  20. Write a letter to someone who you have never liked saying all of the things you wish you could say to them.

There you have it, more prompts for your writing pleasure. If you do use any of them, feel free to share a link in the comments so other people can find your work.

Between Love and Death, the debut novel from Kimberley Crawford’s Love and Death Series, is scheduled for release on December 9th, 2015.
